Happily wed in 1989, we thought we had the world by the tail... No matter how much we loved each other, however, we didn't rely on God to guide our marriage. In addition, we were too proud to admit to anyone that our relationship was on the rocks by the end of our first year together. Instead, we took matters into our own hands.
Less than two years after we’d walked down the aisle to become husband and wife, we walked away from our marriage covenant…and God. The last time we ever spoke to one another was the day our divorce papers were notarized, citing, “Irreconcilable differences have caused the permanent breakdown of our marriage.”
After going our separate ways for over a decade, we both stepped into rewarding careers in public education and stepped out of any involvement in nurturing our personal relationships with God. Unbeknownst to either of us at the time, our lives paralleled during the years after our divorce.
Only after we had made huge messes of our lives did we stop running from God. Humbled and broken on opposite coasts of the United States, we individually recommitted our hearts back to Christ. Then miraculously, after a span of eleven years and a distance of over 3,000 coast-to-coast miles, God intersected our paths once again. We both admitted our part in the breakdown of our marriage and asked for forgiveness. Neither of us had married during the years we were apart and within six months of reconnecting, we were married once again in 2002—this time, forever.
